at various stages of running a business, with the space to improvise and innovate.
START is our flagship pre-revenue program, designed to empower early-stage entrepreneurs. This virtual learning experience leverages the Lean Startup methodology to guide participants through the development of their Business Model Canvas, transforming innovative ideas into viable and sustainable business models.
Together, we are looking to arm 15 businesses with the tools and resources to build sustainable ventures.

START is a three-week, virtual incubator program for founders with a clear business concept they want to launch. Open to all genders, the program will run during the Fall 2024, providing participants with a roadmap and resources to build a viable business concept.

COURTNEY MELVIN
Courtney Melvin, a junior at Spelman College, is the CEO and founder of Locstar Hair Oils. Courtney not only seized the spotlight by securing $150 in the Fall 2023 HBCUFI pitch competition but also showcased her entrepreneurial brilliance.
She seeks to empower black individuals with a deeper understanding of the chemistry of their natural hair. Her loc journey began her freshman year of college when she didn't know how to do her hair and was tired of not knowing which products were suited for it. That's when she had a simple yet powerful idea: to create her own hair care brand that is tailored to individual hair porosity levels.
Courtney is also a First-year Study Group Lead and engaged in nonprofit work with PwC, where she has expertise in strategic
consulting for nonprofit social justice organizations.

A native of Milpitas, CA, Nyla Choates is a motivated English major, President of the Spelman Entrepreneurship Club, 2022 Spelpreneur Pitch Competition 1st place winner, Center for Black Entrepreneurship Scholarship recipient, Amazon Black is Entrepreneurial winner, Black Girl Ventures NextGen Finalist, Blackstone Launchpad Fellow, and Target Scholar. Nichele has maintained a 4.0 GPA and she is a member of the Ethel Waddell Githii Honors program, the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, the Social Justice Program as a John Lewis Scholar, and a fellow within the Spelman Innovation Lab. While her love for human rights and entrepreneurship inspired her to create a small business that donated 10% of its proceeds to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and the ACLU Racial Justice Program, it is her love for environmental justice that inspired her in 2020 to create Oshun, a zero-waste lipstick case that minimizes waste pollution generated by the cosmetics industry. As a
digitalundivided START fellow, Nichele is looking to further develop and solidify the business aspect of this product.

FAQs
Who is eligible to apply?
Overall, the program is open to any founder over 18 years old and whose business is on the pre-revenue stage and based in the United States of America.
Is there a limit to the number of times a student can apply?
We will only review the first application submitted per company, and founders are not allowed to apply as more than one company. We welcome applications from companies that include co-founders, especially those with leadership teams that reflect the mission of digitalundivided.
When and where will the START program take place?
All sessions will be held online. Sessions will run every Tuesday, from November 12, 2024 until December 5, 2024, 6-7:30 p.m. ET.
What will participants gain from participating?
The program will equip selected founders with a competitive training in launching a startup including guidance on developing a business model canvas, identifying their customer personas and hypothesis and pitching their venture. All participants who successfully complete the program will have a pitch deck and will be eligible to join it.
What is the selection process?
Once applications close on October 13, 2024, we will review submissions and ask the semi-finalist to submit a one-minute video with their business pitch. Finalist ventures will be determined and notified - we don’t typically announce it publicly until the cohort starts on November 4, 2024. We will notify declined applicants before the public cohort announcement via email.
